From Radio City Music Hall Rockette to the Local Community College in Weed, California, with a population of 3695, is quite a change in scenery. But that is what happened when in 2004 Joan Lucas moved to care for her father. After his death in 2006 she chose to make it her new home and start a Senior Theatre at the local College of the Siskiyous. She continued until 2011 when student, DeLeon Grabowski, took the reins of the company and became the director.
With the support of the College and help from The Senior Theatre Resource Center, the Theatre is now in its 18th year and has had over 300 students attend and perform. Every spring the group performs a full-length variety show of comedy and drama for two weekends. They then tour 20-30 minute cuttings from the show to civic organizations, community events, retirement and nursing homes.
Theater-goers’ say, “Your show was awesome. It was inspirational, wonderfully conceived and tremendously entertaining.” Bob S.
“I came home feeling hopeful and full of gratitude to our elders in the community for sharing their insight and wisdom, humor and compassion.” Meadow B.
With titles like The Sunset Gang Rides Again, We’re Not Quite Dead Yet, and Still Crazy After All These Years, the company has continued to grow. Their motto is: If it isn’t fun we won’t do it.
